Dr. Adesina Paul ARIKAWE
Faculty

Dr. ARIKAWE, Adesina Paul is a Senior Lecturer in Physiology. He started off with research interest in endocrine and reproductive physiology with focus on how diabetes mellitus using insulin resistance mechanisms impairs reproductive functions in animals.

However, about a decade ago after acquiring both MBBS and PhD degrees in Physiology, he won the prestigious FAPESP Postdoctoral Fellowship award in Brazil and this enabled a new research interest in the field of neuroendocrinology. From his Postdoc studies, he reported that neurons of the central components of the stress system are overactive and that during perimenopause overreaction of noradrenergic neurons of locus coeruleus (LC) is due to lower plasma progesterone levels and therefore a decrease of β-endorphin inhibition of LC neurons. Currently he is working on Kisspeptin signaling in cognition and anxiety and how this influence stress response in perimenopausal animal models. He has 37 publications in peer review journals and has; presented his research findings at national and international scientific meetings. He has supervised over 15 Masters theses and currently supervising 3 PhD students. He won numerous national and international research and travel grant awards including FAPESP award.
