Caroline Emosioke Umebese is a Professor of Plant Physiology and former Head of Department of Botany, University of Lagos. She received MSc. and PhD in Botany at the University of Ibadan and she was a University of Ibadan scholar. She also obtained M.Ed. in Guidance and Counselling at the University of Lagos. She spent the last thirty five (35) years teaching and conducting research on the impact of environmental stressors, such as water deficit, heavy metals, edaphic factors, industrial effluents and light intensity on plant growth, metabolism, cytogenetic properties, phytochemicals and subsequent medicinal properties of some of these plants. She investigated the use of some hormones in ameliorating the impact of stressors. The present research focus of her group is the identification of resistant genes that can combat abiotic stress conditions in selected crop lines. Her second focus is on biosynthesis and impact of nanoparticles on the physiology and medicinal activity of some plants. She received World Bank and University of Lagos grants for part of her research.
