Dr Akang is a lecturer 1 in the Clinical Embryology, Andrology and Genetics unit, of the Department of Anatomy.He is also the leader of Fertility and Andrology Team (FAT).He has a keen interest in improving male fertility byunderstanding the basic mechanisms underpinning spermatogenesis and male infertility. In January 2015, he obtained a Ph.D. in Anatomy specializing in reproductive biology and March 2016, he proceeded for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Morphology and Andrology Group (MAG),Division of Clinical Anatomy, University of KwaZulu-Natal.He is an external examiner for foreign universities including University of Limpopo. He is the course coordinator for Advanced Developmental Anatomy for postgraduate students of the Department of Anatomy. He has organized 2 successful faculty conferences (2018, 2019) and one international workshop “TREND” (2019) in the University of Lagos.

 

Dr Akang is a two time recipient of the Fogarty International center of National institute of Health sponsored BRAINS (BuildingResearch and Innovation in Nigeria's Science)MEPI grant (D43TW010134) for the training of junior faculty.He has supervised to graduation more than 10 postgraduate students. Hiscurrent researchexplores new biomarkers for infertility in men including HIV infected men.

 

In the near future, he hopes to have significantly reduced male infertility and improve sex determination by offering several economically affordable options.ORCID ID:orcid.org/0000-0001-8690-7778
