Dr. O. Musa Babalola
Faculty
Department of Biochemistry.

Dr. Babalola is a biochemist with focus on Biotechnology and Biochemistry of fungi of medical importance. He obtained a Final Diploma in Microbiology/Virology from the University of Ibadan in 2001. He proceeded to the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta to obtain a B.Sc. in Chemistry in 2004. He received his postgraduate trainings at the University of Lagos where he obtained both M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2007 and 2015 respectively. He has hands on proficiency in enzymology and molecular biology techniques. He could also utilise basic bioinformatics softwares for analysis of sequences. Dr. Babalola has been involved in research on genetic modification of fungi for biotechnology applications for his doctoral studies. His focus after Ph.D. has been the transcriptional analysis of drug resistant genes in fungi of medical importance. However, within the past eighteen months, he has also picked interest in studies on polymorphisms associated with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in children with sickle and normal haemoglobin phenotypes. This was necessary due to rising burden of sickle-cell anaemia in Nigeria.  At the moment he is part of a research team that is on a national study to standardize Aspergillus specific IgG assays for diagnosis of Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis amongst Nigerians. A study funded by the US government.
