Prof. Asekun has spent the last twenty-seven (27) years teaching chemistry and contributing to research in the field of Essential Oil Chemistry and Natural Product. She is specialised in the chemistry of aromatic plants with flavour and fragrance useful to the cosmetic, food and pharmaceutical industry. She also works on phytochemicals in medicinal plants.

Prof. (Mrs.) Olayinka Taiwo Asekun’s academic and professional qualifications include: B.Sc. Chemistry, Ogun State University now Olabisi   Onabanjo University (1987); M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry, University of Lagos, Akoka (1990); Ph.D. Organic Chemistry, University of Ibadan (2001). Fellow Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (2018); Fellow of the Institute of Security of Nigeria (2015); Member Chemical Society of Nigeria (1993); Member Society of Medicinal Plant Research (2007); Member Institute of Public Analyst (2009).

She has thirty-seven (37) publications in both Local and International reputable journals and chapters in books, Professor Asekun has participated and presented papers in numerous National and International Conferences. She has also supervised many Postgraduate Dissertations, PhD Thesis in Organic Chemistry, as well as undergraduate projects.

Her research interest covers the chemical composition of essential oils of Nigerian medicinal and economic plants. She also developed a keen interest in the study of the phytochemical compositions and bioactivities of some Nigerian plants used in the management of some degenerative diseases. Sometime ago, she worked on Organic synthesis of biomolecules through selective radical addition to unsaturated system.

 

She won and managed a research grant from the University of Lagos.
