Anatomic & Molecular Pathology

Fatimah Abdulkareem is a Professor of Anatomic Pathology with focus on gastrointestinal tract and Liver Pathology. She has her undergraduate degree in Medicine & Surgery, graduated from the University of Calabar, Nigeria in 1988 with Distinction in Pathology and Best Student Prize in Pharmacology. She won the scholarship of the International Society of Nephrology in 1996-97 to undergo one year fellowship Renal Pathology at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada and UICC ICRETT fellowship at the University of Leeds UK in 2007.

She has over 20years experience, conducted research made significant contributions to knowledge having >100 academic publications in local and international peer-reviewed journals, contributed to 5 books, attended >90 local and international workshops and conferences and has presented >70 academic papers at these conferences. She has managed about 6 grants, won the UICC award to organize training workshop for Pathologists and histoscientists in 2008, African Cancer Leaders Institute Award - AORTIC 2017 and Best Teacher Award for her department in 2017 and 2nd Best Teacher in 2000. 

Her research focus is on cancer with special interest in cancer genetics.  She has contributed to the sub-Saharan African experience on colorectal cancer (CRC). Her collaborative study on KRAS and BRAF mutations in Nigerian CRC, the first to be carried out in the West African, established that KRAS mutation in Nigerians is half  the rate in Caucasians and therefore patients with advanced CRC are more likely to benefit from anti-EGFR therapies. She is the Pathology lead for the LUTH Research center for the U54 (NIH) Grant to study the epigenetic biomarkers of HIV-associated cancers in Nigeria.
