Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Professor Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo is a Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. His major area of research interest is genetics and genomics and environmental influence in the aetiology of orofacial clefts. He at the University of Ibadan in 1988 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS. Between 1999 and 2004, he was at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for his residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He was awarded a German Government Scholarship to pursue a PhD in University of Cologne, Germany. He was awarded a Ph.D by University of Cologne in 2006.

Prof. Adeyemo holds a Master degree in Public Administration (University of Lagos). He is a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCDS), a Fellow of West African College of Surgeons (FWACS), and a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS). He also holds a Diploma in Research Bioethics, and a Certificate in Genetics and Genomics (Stanford University).

Professor Adeyemo has won many research grants which include: 4 CRC Unilag grants; Lagos State Research Development Council grant; TETFund Institutional Based Research; European Union Training Grant (PAMAPS); 4 National Institute of Health (NIH) grant. Presently, he is one of the key personnel in a recently awarded Fogarty/NIH grant award to College of Medicine University of Lagos: Building Research and Innovation in Nigeria Science (BRAINS). He is the coordinator of the Genetics and Genomics aspect of the grant.

Professor Adeyemo has won many awards and distinctions which include: University of Lagos Best Researcher Award (2006); Best Researcher Award, CMUL (2009); Best Researcher Award, Faculty of Dental Sciences, CMUL (2011, 2012 and 2014); and Distinguished Researcher Award, CMUL (2009). He was adjudged the most cited researcher in University of Lagos and 13th in Nigeria in 2015 by Webometrics (Webometrics Ranking of World Universities).

Professor Adeyemo has presented his research works in more than 100 national and international conferences. He has published over 168 papers in both national and international peer-reviewed journals. Areas covered in his published research works include: Cleft lip and palate; Maxillofacial trauma; Implantology; Dento-alveolar surgery; Maxillofacial reconstruction; Maxillofacial Oncology; and Genetics/Genomics of orofacial cleft.
