EMERITUS PROFESSOR AKINJIDE OSUNTOKUN

Akinjide Osuntokun is an Emeritus Professor in the Department. He taught also at the University Maiduguri where he served as Head of History (1982- 1985), Dean of Arts (1982- 1984), Member of the Governing Council (1982-1985), and Ag. Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies (1984-1985). Professor Osuntokun was appointed professor at the University of Lagos in 1986 where he served until retirement in 2006. Prof. Osuntokun is author and editor of about fifteen books including Ladoke Akintola: His Life and Times, Power Broker: Biography of Sir Kashim Ibrahim, Equatorial Guinea- Nigerian Relations: The Diplomacy of Labour, Dimensions of Environmental Problems in Nigeria, Environmental Problems of the Niger Delta, and the seminal work Nigeria in the First World War. Prof. Osuntokun has also served in the public service at different times and in different capacities. He was Director of the National Universities Commission’s offices in Ottawa and Washington (1978-1981), Special Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (1988-1991), and Nigeria’s first Ambassador to the Re-Unified Germany (1991-1995). Professor Osuntokun is at present a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on International Relations and Pro-Chancellor of Ekiti State University.
