Dr. Chinonyelum L. OFORKA

Dr. Oforka holds a B.Sc. (First Class Hons.) degree in Zoology (2010) and a Ph.D. in Applied Entomology and Pest Management (2018) from the University of Lagos. Her primary research interest is in the field of medical entomology. As part of her Ph.D. research, she visited Auburn University in Alabama, USA in 2016, to carry out advanced molecular characterization studies on the black flies which transmit parasitic worms that cause River blindness in Africa. She currently conducts research on mosquito bio-ecology and control in understudied communities where mosquito-borne diseases are endemic, with a view to inform sustainable vector control measures and ultimately improve public health. She also has research interest in control of insect pests of stored products and field crops to enhance food security.

Since joining the University in 2019 as Lecturer II, Dr. Oforka has mentored several students. She has ten publications thus far in reputable peer-reviewed journals and has presented her research works at both local and international conferences. She has won some awards, fellowships and early-career grants, and is a member of several professional organizations notably the Entomological Society of Nigeria, Entomological Society of America, Systematics Association, and the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
