Dr. Ayorinde Babatunde James
Faculty
Biochemistry

Dr. James is a Biochemist and Molecular biologist who has research contributions in the  areas of anticancer drug discovery, molecular oncology, and virology. He had his B.Sc. degree in Biochemistry from the Lagos State University in 2004; M.Sc. Biochemistry in 2008; and Ph.D. Biochemistry in 2015 from the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos-Nigeria.

Due to the scope of his research experience, Dr. James has developed various Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) based assays for the detection of genetic mutations and gene expression profiles of various genes implicated in some pathological conditions. As a Project supervisor in the role of a Molecular biologist and bioinformatician in the Virology Unit, Central Research Laboratory-CMUL, he sequenced and submitted the amplified fragment of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (L) gene of Filoviruses to the Genbank (Accession No. KM251803.1) for the phylogenetic analysis and laboratory confirmation of Zaire ebolavirus detected in urine and blood specimens of Nigeria’s index case during the last Ebola outbreak in Nigeria.

His PhD training afforded him the opportunity to use the Becton Dickinson (BD, USA) C6-Accuri® Flow Cytometer for the quantitative evaluation of apoptosis, necrosis and reactive oxygen species generation in Human cervical cancer cell lines. Asides from the laboratory skills acquired from his home institution, In June 2014, the American Society for Cell Biology in conjunction with Millipore sponsored his business & project management training at the Keck Graduate Institute, Carlifornia-USA. The theme “Managing Science in the Biotech Industry” provided a platform for him to appreciate budgeting, research design & implementation, business conceptualization, finance & business strategy in the biotech industry.

Dr. James is a member of the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB); American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB); and the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID).
