Dr. Francisca Obiageri Nwaokorie
Faculty
Medical Laboratory Science, Basic Medical Sciences.

Dr. Nwaokorie is a Medical Microbiologist with speciality on anaerobic bacteriology, Laboratory Management and human Microbiome. I trained as a Medical Microbiologist at Lagos University Teaching Hospital Idi-Araba where I obtained the Associate and Fellow of Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria  in 1995 and 1997 respectively.  I have Masters in Medical Microbiology from University of Lagos and another Masters in Business Administration   from Imo State University. I also have a PhD in Medical Microbiology from the University of Lagos in 2009. Over the years. I have carried out research in oral microbiology, Cholera Infection, microbial genetics of Fusobacterium nucleatum and Clostridium Species as well as  human microbiome,. I have been involved in the training and use of molecular techniques in laboratory diagnosis and research in Nigeria. I have also used my expertise in microbial genetics to characterize and genotype strains of public health importance peculiar to Nigeria. I have received intensive training in course facilitation and train the trainer from WHO-AFRO SLIPTA/SLMTA Program for Strengthening Laboratory Management Towards Accreditation in Africa using a step wise approach. The overall objective is to build in-country human capacity that will strengthen laboratory management, achieve immediate laboratory improvement, and accelerate the preparedness of laboratories towards ISO 15189 accreditation. This program has helped in improving quality services selected organized public and private diagnostic and research laboratories. In 2014, I was among the four Africans trained in United Kingdom on Fundamentals of Technology Transfer sponsored by West African Network of Excellence for TB, AIDS and Malaria (WANETAM). The main thrust of the course was to develop the skills of technology transfer officers (TTO) who would act as intermediary between universities or research institute, the inventor, and the industry.  This is to facilitate the commercialization of research products such as inventions and creations which most times would require intellectual property rights and negotiation with interested parties. I also have a Master’s degree in Management, this has equipped me with good managerial skills and capability to plan, organize, coordinate, evaluate and assess training programs, human management and to foster effective research implementation.

I have mentored four PhDs, 14 masters including an International student from University of Iowa’s Center for Emerging Infectious Disease and 6 Fellows of the Medical College and Dental Surgery (FMCDS). I am a Professional member of Medical Laboratory Science council of Nigeria. I am the coordinator of Implementation Research Group. I am an ASLM auditor (African Society for Laboratory Medicine) and a Nigerian SLMTAn. A Member of Association of Medical laboratory Sciences Council of Nigeria. Member, Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), American Society for Microbiology Member, Anaerobe Society of the Americas and an Official Member of SDE/Graduate Women in Science (SDE/GWIS), USA.

I have over 35 publications. I won and managed BRAINS Mentored Research Grant awarded in 2016.
