Dr. Adekemi OMOTUBORA

Dr Omotubora is a lecturer at the department of Commercial and Industrial Law with teaching and research expertise in Information Technology, emerging technologies, Intellectual property and Commercial law. She obtained my PhD (in Information Technology Law) from the University of Leeds (UK) in 2015 and LLM (in Cyberlaw) from the same University. Her PhD thesis titled Critical Perspectives on Cybersecurity: A Case Study of Identity-related Cybercrime in Electronic Payment Systems in Nigeria, examined the security and privacy challenges of new e-payment systems and made recommendations for the development of comprehensive cybersecurity strategies. Shealso attended the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife where she obtained LL.B. in 1997 and LL.M. (with distinction) in 2001. She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1999 and was in private legal practice before joining the University of Lagos.Dr Omotubora has received many academic awards including for best poster presentation at theAnnual postgraduate conference of the Faculty of Education, Social Sciences and Law (ESSL), University of Leeds (2015), best overall LLM 2003, Obafemi Awolowo University and best graduating student in Law of banking and negotiable instruments, Jurisprudence and Legal theory, and Law of Insurance and Company law, as an undergraduate at the Obafemi Awolowo University. She collaborates with with researchers in the UK and Nigeria and has worked on funded interdisciplinary projects in the area of robotics and artificial intelligence.Dr Omotubora has presented papers at many academic conferences and her articles have been published in high impact peer-reviewed journals. In her spare time, she likes to watch movies, documentaries and football. She also likes to travel and she is a great lover of nature.

Research Interests:

Dr Omotubora’s writing and research focus on the intersection of law and technology. She is particularly interested in e-commerce, e-contracts and e-payments and data protection and identity management as well as national security in a cybersecurity context. Her current research investigates the law, ethics and regulation of emerging technologies, in particular, the ethical implications of artificial intelligence and cognitive computing in legal practice (legaltech) and the regulation of Fintech and cryptocurrencies.
